A pendant is the one fitting in a room you can't ignore. It hangs at eye level, it's on show whether it's lit or not, and the shade material does more to set the character of a room than the bulb inside it ever will.

Choosing a Pendant by Shade Material
The material is the first decision, and it's the one that's hardest to undo. Everything else — finish, drop, bulb — can be adjusted or swapped. The shade is what you'll be looking at.
Glass — the most versatile, and the most popular in UK homes. Glass sends light down and outward rather than trapping it, so a glass pendant lights a room properly instead of just marking a spot on the ceiling. It also doesn't block sightlines, which matters in a smaller room where a solid shade can feel like it's dividing the space.

Rattan and natural weave — warm, tactile, and the only shade material that adds visible texture to a room during the day. Woven rattan throws a patterned light rather than an even one, which is either the point or the problem depending on the room. Best in kitchens with wood, stone or linen already in the scheme, and in hallways where a bit of softness is welcome. Our Vale pendants come in natural and blackened rattan.
Wire cage — an open metal frame with no shade at all. The bulb is the design, so a decorative filament LED isn't optional. Cage pendants throw the most direct, undiffused light of anything we sell, which makes them genuinely good task lighting over a worktop and a poor choice anywhere you want atmosphere. The Crest comes in matt black and French gold.
Solid metal — copper, brass and matt black shades push all the light straight down in a defined cone. Café-style and industrial in feel. The Luca in antique brass and the Ember in domed copper both do this; the Volt in matt black is the plainest and the least expensive way into the look.
Which Fitting Finish?
The metal that holds the shade should agree with the hardware already in the room — taps, handles, cupboard knobs, appliance trims. If there's no obvious dominant metal, antique brass is the safe default. It's warm without being showy and it sits comfortably against cream, white, navy, dark green and bare wood.
Antique bronze is the same warmth with the gold taken out — better against darker timber and slate. Antique silver is the cooler option and the one that makes smoked glass look deliberate rather than just dark. French gold is a contrast statement and works hardest against black or deep navy cabinetry.
Where Pendants Go
Over a kitchen island — usually two or three, evenly spaced, hung high enough to see across and low enough to light the worktop. The full sizing and spacing method is in our kitchen island pendant guide.

In a hallway, landing or small room — a pendant earns its keep here more than anywhere. There's rarely floor space for a lamp and the ceiling is usually the only surface going spare. Keep the shade diameter modest and the drop short in a narrow entrance.
Before You Order
Two numbers to check, both listed on every product page:
Drop length — measured from the ceiling to the base of the shade. Nearly all our pendants have adjustable cable so this can be shortened on installation, but not lengthened. If you have high ceilings, check the maximum drop before you buy.
Shade diameter — the width at the widest point. This is the measurement people consistently underestimate. A shade that looks generous in a photograph often reads as undersized once it's hanging in a full-size room.
